Alumni Association Picks up Where Fishers Police Citizen’s Academy Ends

Officers Ed Gebhart and Jamie Alvis have found a way to keep the training and camaraderie going for the graduates of the Fishers Police Department Citizen’s Academy. A new Citizen’s Academy Alumni Association has been up and running for almost one year. Each year the Fishers Police Department graduates two Citizen’s Academy classes. During these classes Fishers residents get to go behind the scene of the Fishers Police Department and receive basic training on different scenarios that happen in the [...]

  • Real Estate Market is Brighter in Fishers

Unlike other parts of Hamilton County, Indiana, the real estate statistics in Fishers paint a rosier picture for home sellers. Since before the end of last year, the statistics for the number of homes sold have been declining across the country. There have also been regional trends where the average sales prices have been decreasing, but not in Fishers. According to the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors (MIBOR), the average sales price of homes in July 2006 was down .9% [...]

  • Furnace Tune-Up Time

With the fun, hectic days of summer winding down, it’s likely that most of us aren’t thinking about the cold winter ahead. But, if your vision of a perfect winter includes sipping hot chocolate in your warm, comfy home while watching the snow falling gently outdoors, then you should take the necessary steps now to make that happen. First, it’s not too early to schedule a furnace tune-up from a licensed HVAC contractor. If you have a gas furnace, make [...]

  • Take Your Mark, Get Set, Spell!

Sovereignty, zeppelin and phenomenon. Not words that we use in everyday conversation or writing, but if we do find the need to use those words – or words like them – well, thank God for spell check, or even an old-fashioned dictionary. However, for a select few fifth through eighth graders at Riverside School, learning how to spell words like these is what they love to do and, to my amazement, have volunteered to do! I am talking about the [...]

  • Hop on a Hayride at Local Fall Festivals

Autumn leaves, brittle and brown, crunch underfoot. Fall winds, crisp and cool, blow autumn kisses on rosy cheeks. Fall is the perfect time for outdoor festivity. Not too hot or too cold, autumn is just right for reviving your senses and venturing out on a hayride at one of the nearby places that celebrate Fall and family traditions. • Halloween Fun, Facts and Safety Tips

The Halloween tradition has many symbols associated with it. One of the most popular icons of Halloween is, of course, the pumpkin. It was the Irish who started carving gourds and turnips in Ireland. But in the 1840s when the Irish came to America to leave the potato famine, they found out quickly that pumpkins were much easier to carve. So how did this translate into “Jack-O-Lantern?” According to an Irish tale, a man named Jack (who was a trickster [...]

  • Geist Christian Church Branching North into Fishers

When Pastor Randy Spleth started Geist Christian Church 21 years ago, the small congregation of just 31 people couldn’t have envisioned what it would become two decades later. With about 2,500 people attending services and special programs, Geist Christian ranks among the largest churches in the area, and the rapid growth shows no signs of slowing. Although the church just finished a 15,000-square-foot addition to its facility at 86th Street and Mud Creek Road, plans are underway for a North [...]

  • Basketball is Always in Season at The Fieldhouse

Basketball season is almost here and at The Fieldhouse in Fishers it is always basketball season! We are “Hoosiers” after all and it is in our blood to play the ole hoop now and again all year round! You could step in this awesome facility and yell Hickory and listen for the echo and watch for Gene Hackman to appear or you can sign up for some great exercise, instruction and practice. I met with Mark Tamm who, along with [...]

  • Hawthorns Golf Pro and Indiana PGA Player of the Year Alan Schulte

From the time he was 10 years old, Fishers resident Alan Schulte has been swinging a golf club, honing his game and building his golf career. I caught up with this golf pro and PGA member at his home course of Hawthorn Country Club one overcast morning. We sat outside overlooking a perfectly manicured putting green while I gathered some insights on this local pro; his life, career and what keeps him going. Schulte had a pretty impressive and busy [...]
