Ever wonder what happens when you get a DUI in Indiana? Well, getting a cab ride home could save you a lot in the long run!

When someone drives under the influence, there is always the risk of causing serious injury or killing innocent people. Drunk driving is extremely dangerous and the laws are meant to deter people from getting behind the wheel after they have had too much to drink. But what happens when you get a DUI? What type of punishment will you receive if you get a DUI, and how can you expect it to affect you financially?

The answer to that question varies, but if you get a DUI, you will likely have to participate in an alcohol abuse program, pay fines, possibly have your license suspended/revoked, or get points added to your driving record. And after all that, your auto insurance company will likely increase your monthly premium.

Depending on the situation, a misdemeanor charge usually comes with the first DUI. If you have a prior DUI conviction or a passenger under the age of 18 in the vehicle, you will likely face a Class D felony charge and possibly some time in jail.

On top of all this, you will then be faced with court costs and the issue of whether you need to hire an attorney. You could represent yourself, but it would be best to hire an attorney. An attorney may cost a bit of money, but it will be worth the extra cost to have an advocate on your side that knows the law and can help you through an unfamiliar situation.

With the economy the way it is and budgets tight, DUI laws likely won’t get lenient any time soon. Drunk driving is totally irresponsible. So, with the holidays approaching, we suggest calling a cab if you have had a little too much to drink. There’s too much to lose driving drunk! Have fun, be safe, and enjoy the holidays!

The Fishers Police Department is teaming up with the Fishers YMCA Teen Center to reach out to the teens of Fishers. The 11th annual Fishers Police Department Teen Academy will be held at the YMCA Teen Center July 18th through July 22nd 2011. The academy is one week of law enforcement type training that will allow teens ages 13-17 to better understand how law enforcement works.

The academy will also allow teens to get to know several officers. Each day will begin with physical exercise. The students will then attend classroom training followed by practical hands on skills to reinforce the lesson of the day. Each day will conclude with a social activity with officers and students.

“The children in our community are very important to us and with the success of Teen Academy, we are excited to work with the kids again this year.” said Chief George Kehl.

The purpose of the academy is to allow teens to better understand police officers and to strengthen the relationship between the police department and the community.

Officers will teach blocks of instruction on various topics such as emergency vehicle operations, building searches, drug investigations and domestic violence. Students will have classroom instruction as well as practical “role play” training each day.

For more information or to enroll in the Teen Academy, contact Officer Kevin Sutton at the Fishers Police Department at 317-596-7421.

The Fishers Police Department arrested two men early this morning after an alert resident in the Bristols sub-division (126th and Brooks School Road) called police. Officers were called to the 12100 block of Raiders Boulevard at approximately 1:30 am in reference to two men possibly breaking into vehicles.

Officers located the men standing next to a car parked in a driveway on Raiders Boulevard. The men admitted to police that they were looking for gas for their vehicle. Officers located a blue Mercury Cougar parked on Raiders Boulevard. The car was occupied by an adult female and owned by one of the suspects.

“The residents in the Bristols sub-division are actively recruiting volunteers to organize a neighborhood watch program in the neighborhood,” said Sergeant Gerry Hepp. “This is a perfect example of how important it is for neighbors to look out for each other and report suspicious activity immediately. This alert resident interrupted a crime in progress and stopped others from being victims.” Hepp added.

Officers located a gas can in the Mercury Cougar. One of the suspects was carrying a screwdriver and a pocket knife. Officers located a second vehicle on Raiders that the men had been inside. Nothing was taken but several items were thrown on the ground around the outside of the car. The female was released without criminal charges.

In conjunction with approximately 250 state and local law enforcement agencies the Fishers Police Department will participate in an Impaired Driving Crackdown which will extend through the Labor Day holiday. The “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” statewide enforcement effort will go into effect August 17 and will conclude September 9. Law enforcement agencies throughout the state will use roving saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to detect impaired drivers.

According to the 2006 Indiana Traffic Safety Alcohol Fact Sheet, more than 1,000 Hoosiers were killed in alcohol-related collisions on Indiana roadways from 2003-2006. During this same period, about 25,000 individuals sustained incapacitating or other injuries from alcohol-related crashes. Each year, approximately 30 percent of Indiana traffic fatalities occurred in alcohol-related collisions. Pickups, SUV’s and motorcycles appear to be over-represented in alcohol-related collisions, and thus more likely to produce fatal and non-fatal injuries.

“Drunk driving has far reaching ramifications – it does not just start and stop with the person behind the wheel driving drunk. As a former law enforcement officer, I know first hand that the result of a crash involving an impaired driver is devastating and what is even more tragic is that these crashes are clearly preventable,” said Mike Cunegin, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

“Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” is a national impaired driving prevention campaign funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This comprehensive campaign combines high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness through paid advertising. The goal is to counter impaired driving by reminding drivers of the costly and even fatal consequences.
For more information, please call Sergeant Steve Pickett at the Fishers Police Department – (317) 595-3300.
