One of summer’s little luxuries is being able to amble through the local farmer’s market, sampling new foods and picking up fresh, local produce. But what if summer mornings are consumed by soccer games or baseball practice, and what happens when the farmer’s market goes away with the winter weather? Where can a shopper turn to find good local foods? Green B.E.A.N.Delivery, a home delivery service of organic produce and natural groceries has a solution to this dilemma.

Founded in 2007 by Matt Ewer and Beth Blessing, a husband-wife team and Indiana natives, Green B.E.A.N. sought to fill a hole in the local market by providing convenient and affordable access to foods from local farmers and artisans. Says Matt, “We knew that everyone has a busy life, and so we felt that if we could make healthy food options convenient that it would be utilized.”

After a short stint on the west coast where Beth earned her Masters degree in Nutrition and Matt worked as the General Manager of Full Circle Farm, they decided to return to Indiana to start their family and to fulfill their dream of owning a farm. Matt’s knowledge of buying, selling, and growing produce combined with Beth’s nutritional acumen, they decided to work backwards toward reaching the goal of owning a farm. First, they would partner with local farmers and artisans to delivery their goods and eventually purchase their own farm where they would grow many of the organic items that they deliver.

Starting with just 4 employees and utilizing word of mouth and social media as marketing tools, Green B.E.A.N. has grown to having nearly a 100 employees and delivering approximately 2,000 food bins to customers in the greater Indianapolis area. When asked for his opinion as to why the organization grew so quickly, Matt responded, “We have a good understanding that you only grow when you are providing a good product. Since the beginning we have been very focused on the quality of our products and service.”

So how does Green B.E.A.N. work? A customer simply logs on to the website (www.greenbeandelivery.com) and creates an account. The only requirements for membership is a standing order totaling $35 or more. This standing order consists of the produce bin you select and the frequency of delivery, either weekly or bimonthly. The produce bins come in small (for a small family or 2-3 people), medium (sized for a family of 4), or large (sized for a large family). Additional options include a fruit only bin and a produce plus groceries bin. All bins include a mix of seasonal produce. A unique aspect of Green B.E.A.N. is that, unlike similar food delivery services (such as a CSA), members may customize their bins with items they can choose from the company website. The company delivers each bin to the customer’s home on their scheduled date.

“Lots of members have reported weight loss after starting the program,” says Matt. “If healthy food choices are dropped off at your door, you will eat healthier.”

Heather Mullins of Carmel, whose family has been using Green B.E.A.N. for 2 years, agrees. “We decided to use Green B.E.A.N. because we wanted fresh organic produce and dairy in our home at all times. We also thought if we had produce automatically delivered to our house we would be more likely to eat it, and we were right.”

Beth Blessing & Matt Ewer, owners and founders of Green B.E.A.N. Delivery, with their daughter and dog on the Feel Good Farm.

This year Ewer and Blessing realized their dream when they opened Feel Good Farm, a 60-acre organic farm in Sheridan, Indiana. “The B.E.A.N. in our name stands for Biodynamic Education Agriculture and Nutrition, and in 2011 we really focused on agriculture by opening the farm,” says Ewer. In addition to the foods they grow at Feel Good, they typically utilize about 100 different growers during the season with an emphasis on using local farmers. According to Ewer, “Local food is so important to the local community.” In addition to the greater Indianapolis area, Green B.E.A.N. also delivers to Fort Wayne, Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Louisville. Plans for 2012 include developing a farm in the Cincinnati area.

Supporting the local community is a top priority to Green B.E.A.N. “We believe in showing what a food company can do. We take our community partnerships very seriously,” says Ewer. In the 4 years that they have been operating, Green B.E.A.N. has donated over 125,000 pounds of food to local food banks and charities. Green B.E.A.N. partners with Gleaners Food Bank and Second Helpings, as well as organizing their own ongoing food drive, called Constant Can Food Drive. Members can place canned goods into their empty bins for pick up on delivery days to make an easy donation. “It’s important for members to know that when they choose us as a delivery service their money is staying within the community, both by supporting local growers and artisans as well as local charities.” That commitment extends to the customer service they provide their members. Says Mullins, “They are a great business because they provide excellent customer service and are very flexible. The few times we have had an issue over the past 2 years it was quickly resolved. I recommend them to all our friends.”

“It’s been one heck of a ride,” comments Ewer when asked about Green B.E.A.N.’s rapid success, “but we knew if we offered a quality service that the reaction would be positive, and we’re proud of what we’ve been able to do.” So while that weekly stroll through the farmer’s market is a distant memory this time of year, by delivering fresh, local, and quality produce and groceries to customers, Green B.E.A.N. is bringing that farmer’s market experience right to your front door.

This is definitely not your father’s law firm. Young and deeply embedded in their Geist community, they resonate with committed energy that’s packaged with experience in a broad band of legal issues and a prestigious client roster to boot. This legal eagles group at Lewis and Wilkins LLP, or LAW, casts aside any pre-determined images of stuffy, hard to approach solicitors.

They operate in a notorious office space (think Schrenker),which they have turned to the good side where laughter reigns and clients feel welcome to show up any time. It’s the best of all worlds as this firm knows exactly why they chose to set up shop in their Geist backyard and how their expertise fits the fabric of this community. They have just celebrated their one-year anniversary in a compact, but beautifully redesigned office location.

This team of practicing attorneys will quickly refer to Geist locales such as Mama Bear’s (just steps away), Bella Vita Ristorante and Scotty’s Lakehouse as their conference room “C” where they meet with their clients and friends. Clients love the fact that they don’t have to drive all the way downtown to get advice on personal or business legal matters.

Living and working in one’s own neighborhood …

Lewis and Wilkins is heavily invested in the Geist community according to partner John Lewis. Their newest office is on Fall Creek Road just west of Brook School Road.

“This is a great area to live, work and play. It was a no-brainer to open an office here,” says the affable John Lewis. Aside from the stress reliever element, Lewis will tell you straight up what LAW and their clients have in common. “There are winners and losers in business, as in life, and we are successful only if our clients are successful. We help them reach their goals,” he states. “Our clients consider us as part of their team. While some law firms put a priority on the number of clients, we think that places their business first, not the client,” Lewis adds. The LAW firm represents individuals, families, businesses and government offices including the State of Indiana which recently brought LAW in to assist with the State Fair tragedy.

Jim Joven and Steve Koers, both Of Counsel, were involved with Lewis in opening the new office in the Geist area away from the hub of their downtown firm (LAW has offices in South Bend, downtown Indianapolis, and Fishers). Partner Paul Mullin, raised in Geist, operates the downtown Indianapolis LAW office and was a driving force in the decision to open the Geist LAW location.

“This is our community. We all live here. We go to church at St. Simon and Holy Spirit. Our kids go to school here and we coach here. Why not work here?” said Koers. “John and I have known each other for 16 years, and have both served as attorneys for the Catholic Archdiocese,” Koers added. “We were lucky to have mentors in Bill Wood and Jim Tuohy, who believed that clients are also your friends. That relationship allows us to serve them in all matters of their lives, and it instills in our clients a deeper trust to work with us on their important matters. We hold true to this same thought process.”

Amy Becker handles the large task of serving as the office manager with the same warmth as her bosses. Kelly McKillip is their legal assistant and, they have just welcomed a brand new attorney into the fold, Josh Martin of Fishers.

Lewis and Wilkins LLP is located at 11206 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, IN 46256

“Our firm represents a wide variety of clients. Whether it’s a personal will or complex business matters, each client gets the same superb quality of work and our sincere attention to their needs,” said Becker. At the Geist location, LAW attorneys assist in various areas including estate planning, insurance, business and corporate work.

Away from the office, Lewis, Koers and Joven enjoy baseball, basketball and football coaching assignments at St. Simon, the Fieldhouse, Oaklandon Youth Organization, and Fall Creek Little League. Lewis is President of the Lawrence Redevelopment Commission charged with bringing new businesses into the Lawrence and Geist. Koers is entering his second year as President of the St. Simon Parish Council. Koers also is one of the founding owners of Indianapolis’ award-winning Sun King Brewing Company. Joven serves as Chairman of the Board of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

It’s nice to know a friendly and experienced law firm in your own backyard. As I said at the start of this story, they are not your father’s law firm, but they are the attorneys you will want on your side should you ever need one!

Cindy Grove, owner of Eleanor Rozella’s gift shop in Noblesville, refers to herself as the “third sister” to her two employees, sisters Tammy Daubenspeck and Tina Dell. Their camaraderie sets the tone for the fun-loving experience that is Eleanor Rozella’s and carries over to the customers. “You’re not a stranger when you walk in here,” said Cindy. “Tammy and Tina are so much fun; they’re so loving to our customers. It’s like girlfriends. Our customers end up being our friends.”

Just strolling through this gift shop puts a smile on your face because of the cacophony of colors, scents and laughter that greets you. If you’re looking for a unique gift for a favorite person, you’ll find it within Eleanor Rozella’s three floors.

Cindy didn’t have to look far to find the inspiration for the store’s name. On her piano rests a vintage photo of her grandma taken when she was in her 20s. “She was very artsy,” said Cindy. “She loved to knit and make jewelry. I loved her to pieces, and her name just had a ring to it.” So her grandma’s name—Eleanor Rozella—became the name of the shop that resides at 982 Logan Street. The current location of the shop was, as Cindy is fond of saying, “born of divine intervention.”

Eleanor Rozella’s original location was at the Deer Creek Shops, the present location of the IU Health Saxony Hospital. One day Tammy came in to explore the shop and the two struck up a friendship. As a former part owner of Corner Cottage in Noblesville, Tammy mentioned how much she missed the retail business. Cindy promptly hired her to run the store, a relief for Cindy who often travels for her other job as a flight attendant

CIndy Grove holds up a pair of Toms Shoes with a matching headband.

Not long after that, the two were informed they would have to find a new business location as their strip mall was being torn down. Through a timely tip, Cindy learned that Alley Cats in downtown Noblesville was up for sale. Attached to Eddie’s Corner Cafe, the building was 3-1/2 floors of prime location. Cindy was certain the rent would be too high.

It turns out, the worry was for nought. “It was divine intervention. I just turned it over to the Big Guy and said ‘Okay, You’ve got to show me where to go …. The way everything worked out, it’s just like we were meant to be here,” Cindy said. Eleanor Rozella’s opened August 25, 2006 in downtown Noblesville. “We looked at each other and said ‘Here we go!” laughed Tammy. Not too long after that in April 2007, Tina joined the dynamic duo. Cindy also receives support from her parents and sister Norm, Judy and Julie Wilson.

Cindy bought the inventory of Alley Cats, but slowly over time, they put their own stamp on the product line. “We wanted more of an upscale, girly-girl boutique,” said Tammy. “Noblesville had so many shops that had the country, primitive-type home decor. We were taking things in a different direction. People were really excited about it, and we heard all positive about it.”

Today the shop is known for its eclectic, fun mix of items. They carry lines they themselves love and use, and they try to keep up with the trends too. Nestled among the other displays, you’ll find Cindy’s own exclusive line of animated butterflies called Innovative Animation. Cindy also has a penchant for carrying (whenever possible) product lines that encourage “aid through trade,” product lines from Indiana business owners (she loves supporting new Indiana businesses), and made-in-the-USA products. Here’s a few of their product lines.

Photo Letters, Language Arts, Toms Shoes (they were the first shop in Indiana to carry his line), Demdaco, Nora Fleming, Magnabilities, Switch Flops, Lenny & Eva, Moving Butterflies, Alexis Angels, Holly Yashi, Mogo Designs, Sseko Sandals

They also carry horseshoe and collegiate bling for women, as well as lots of baby gift items and unique home decor items.

Overall, Eleanor Rozella’s is the place to be when you need to hear a friendly word or to find that perfect gift. Repeat customers are known to wander in just to feel better on a bad day. Cindy tells a story from one of her customers who fondly refers to Eleanor Rozella’s as her “happy place.” The customer told Cindy, “One day there was a lady in your store who was not being very nice, and I had to tell her, ‘Listen, this is my happy place. If you’re having an issue, I think you need to go somewhere else, because you’re not going to ruin my happy place!’”

When Sherri Meyer, president of Property Group One, LTD, chose the name Watercolors, she envisioned a European Country French community with a colorful ambience. Sherri and her building partner and daughter, Nicole Newkirk, are building their custom condo homes community just north of 96th Street on Olio Road. The name Watercolors is a good fit, as this lovely community has 3 large bodies of water with ever-spraying crystal clear water fountains that come alive at night with rich colors.

In the home building industry, it’s rare when a mother and daughter share the same professional career path as custom builders.

So how did it all begin?

Sherri was a realtor in the 80s and worked with lots of builders. One day, while browsing in a builders’ magazine, she read about a new company, Epcon Communities, that had just begun building custom lifestyle condo homes with a design plan that was far different from other condominium builders anywhere. By the end of the story, this experienced real estate agent was eager to learn more about a builder who was paying attention to shifting homeowner lifestyle trends, creating well-appointed common spaces, plus supplying the advantage of minimal homeowner maintenance, which granted residents the one thing they needed most: Time spent enjoying life.

Her research would lead to the formation of her own company, Property Group One, LTD, and immediately, she signed on with Epcon Communities as a franchise owner. Epcon is the number one builder of ranch condos in the country.

Flash forward a few years

Sherri’s daughter, Nicole Newkirk, was studying marketing at the New York Fashion Institute, but decided that she really was more drawn to the world of real estate. Nicole went with her heart, switching from fashion to selling properties. A good student, she achieved her realtor’s license and then plunged feet first into the fast and furious New York real estate market.

In 2004, Nicole decided to move home and join her mother’s business. Shortly thereafter, they learned that her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer just as she was developing the plans to build Watercolors, a new concept with 4-homes attached in a pinwheel design. Nicole formed a partnership with her mother as director of sales and marketing within Property Group One, LTD.

Abbey model home at Watercolors.

“Nicole brings a youthful approach to our company through the sales end, as well as her ability to develop all the many aspects of our Watercolors website content. She created and manages our successful website seminars (called webinars),” said Sherri.

“It was an easy decision to get involved in this unique project and, to be there in person to support my mom through her cancer journey,” Nicole added. Today, Sherri Meyer is cancer free and this creative partnership, along with Betsy Bly, sales consultant, and Jeff Fraker, director of construction, is excited to announce the expansion of Watercolors with 18 new free-standing condo homes that include full condominium services and maintenance. This is indeed a new concept in building free-standing condo homes.

“Our designers work closely with buyers to create a living space that fits their needs. And, all homes will be ENERGY STAR certified,” said Sherri.

“We are ahead of the curve with the highest of energy standards for our homes,” adds Nicole. “We don’t have to build this way. We just do.”

These new models, ranging from 1500 to 2000 square feet, offer the possibility of expanding to nearly 3,000 square feet. They include private outdoor living courtyards with window views that allow an abundance of wonderful natural lighting from every view. The interior of these new models are designed for openness with attention to detail that is sure to put the expression WOW back into your vocabulary.

The well-cared-for Clubhouse includes a heated swimming pool, private entry, and a fully equipped exercise area. Homeowners can relax with family or friends in a beautifully decorated common area that serves as an extension to all Watercolor homeowners. Equipped with a full kitchen, it can be reserved by any owner for private parties as well.

Besides their already busy schedules, Sherri, Nicole and Betsy also share a hobby. They are involved with international and national dog show competitions. Their show dogs include Afghan Hounds, Italian Greyhounds and Border and Norwich Terriers. If you want to hear some very interesting stories, just ask them about their travels and their dog showing experiences. Needless to say, at Watercolors pets are most welcome!

To learn more about Watercolors call: (317) 336-6634. Visit the website at: www.condosinfishers.com
Reservations are now open for securing your lot and your model preference.

What does it take to achieve an ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION?

Not all new homes are energy efficient. To earn an ENERGY STAR certification, a home must be inspected and tested to be at least 30% more energy efficient than standard construction, which will save homeowners thousands of dollars. Less than 12% of homes in the U.S. are ENERGY STAR qualified.

What does maintenance-free living include?

Professionally landscaped common areas

Lawn service

Snow removal to your FRONT door

Sewer

Trash removal

Fire, hazard, liability and building insurance (except personal possessions)

Common area lighting

Exterior building maintenance

Street and driveway maintenance and repair

Operation of swimming pool and community center

Reserves and future replacement funds (limited)

Professional management services

Do you remember your first day of school as a kid? The unknown classroom. The new teacher. Locker combinations. What desk is yours? Will you sit next to a friend? Thoughts, and even more thoughts. I can remember when I was entering grade school. I still got a little bit nervous. There was always something about the first day that brought out a little anxiety in me.

Suppose you’re going to an entirely new school. New everything. That can be quite an adjustment at any age. Imagine you’re stepping into the cafeteria at lunch time looking around for someone to sit with. You find a couple of familiar faces from your classroom, sit down, open your lunch box, and suddenly the fear goes away. Why? A little note from your mother or father, tucked carefully away in your lunch box, wishing you a great first day of school. Makes that peanut butter sandwich taste a little bit better, doesn’t it?

Add a modern twist on the lunch box note and you have Lunch Box ScribblesTM.

“Lunch Box Scribbles are a great way to leave a personal note in your little ones’ lunch bag each day. They are reusable chalkboards in fun foam shapes and are the perfect way to remind your children that you are thinking of them throughout the day,” said creator Carolyn Carter.

How much fun is that?

Carolyn started CaitiMac Creations® in 2007 with her first product, called the Clingy CordTM, after realizing that her firstborn, then a toddler, loved to throw anything she could get her hands on. “I was tired of picking up her sippy cups off the dirty floor, worried about losing her bunny blanket and concerned about how many germs she was coming into contact with after she had thrown her items to the ground at the park or mall. My husband and I had an idea, and created the first Clingy CordTM to address the problem. People began stopping me everywhere I went to ask me where I got it; the word spread, and it grew from there.”

Carolyn has gotten all the motivation for running her business from her customers and three beautiful children. “My kids are my inspiration; without them I never would have conceived my product ideas. As far as role models go, I really look up to other mom entrepreneurs who have created wildly successful businesses in the midst of the hectic schedule that being a stay-at-home mom brings.”

“Being a business owner can be very challenging, especially with three young kids at home. But inventing a product that is not only unique but helpful is extremely rewarding. Hearing how my Clingy Cord has given extra security to a mom who was terrified of losing their child’s precious blanket while at Disney World is very reassuring that my product is really worthwhile. And hearing how excited a child was to get a “cool note” in their lunch box gives me the motivation to keep my ideas coming and my confidence high. I love being a mom business owner,” says Carolyn.

A club exists here in Fishers, meeting once a month, allowing members to create their own greeting cards, share their ideas, and get discounts and direction from their very own demonstrator who uses Stampin’ Up products.

“I like to do crafty, artsy things,” says Elizabeth Murphy, demonstrator for a Stampin’ Up group that meets once a month in her home. Elizabeth has been affiliated with this exciting assembly for about five years. With the Stampin’ Up Company, she orders products online, such as cardstock papers, ribbons, markers, and stamp pads, in which everything coordinates impeccably well with matching colors. She in turn, provides her group members with a discount for these products.

She has mastered her creativity to the level that she feels confident making her own greeting cards and party favors. Plus, not only did she make her own wedding invitations, but she also made them for her friends at work. The Stampin’ Up clan, however, doesn’t only make cards alone.

“We take everyday household items and turn them into something unique,” says Elizabeth. For example, she has taken paint cans, covered them with decorative cardstock paper, and converted them into pen/pencil holders. Other items she and her participants have made are candy containers, stationary sets, redesigned notebooks, magnets, coasters and much more.

Another clever transformation was a project that entailed folding two or three lunch sacks together and embellishing them to create a mini-scrapbook album. This idea was brought to the group by BethAnn Buehler, a group member who has also become a demonstrator for Stampin’ Up products. Both she and Elizabeth originally met years ago when they both attended meetings using these products. Now, in addition to being good friends, they both serve as demonstrators hosting creative events in their own homes.

“Elizabeth’s club inspired me to start a group of my own, and I’m blessed to be able to participate in both clubs,” says BethAnn. “At Elizabeth’s club, I can go and be a participant and gain inspiration from her projects. At my own club, I get to teach and inspire. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Recently, Elizabeth has also ventured into another creative domain with Copic Markers. She has become a certified instructor for these markers, which are alcohol based, allowing one to use a variety of shading techniques.

Since Elizabeth has a daytime job, she finds it convenient to host an event during the evening, which is ideal for women like her who work outside the home. Conversely, BethAnn hosts a daytime gathering, catering to stay-at-home moms, empty nesters and stampers with daytime availability much like her.

BethAnn states, “One Wednesday a month over muffins and coffee, I get to hit the pause button on my hectic life and enjoy the time spent with friends when we come together to create handmade cards and gifts. What I enjoy most are the friendships I’ve made with women like me who like getting out and doing something worthwhile with the limited amount of free time and resources they have to spend.”

If you would like to learn how to make your own cards, invitations, party favors and so much more, feel free to contact Elizabeth at elizabethiu@hotmail.com or bethann@bethannbuehler.com for more information. The Stampin’ Up club welcomes you to come by and see what it’s all about. Who knows, you may even decide to join. You can bring a friend or come alone!

However, if you don’t feel very creative or crafty, then you may prefer for Elizabeth or BethAnn to help you design your special order for personalized invitations, graduation cards, baby announcements, anniversary cards, etc. With so many cards out there today on the market containing routine, mechanical words, it’s exciting to think not only about controlling your own verse and images on a personalized card to someone you care about, but also “Stampin’ Up” to a whole new level of creativity.

A priest, a pastor, and a business owner walk into a restaurant. It sounds like the start of a good joke, right? Well it is no joke, but rather something quite interesting. Three of the most respected men in the greater Fishers community have teamed up to create a weekly event that is turning some heads.

Father Phil Bowers, Pastor Joe Freeman, and local restaurant owner Ed Sahm are hosting an event called “In Good Spirits.” This event allows individuals who have an interest in having a personal life & spiritual dialogue, raise a glass, and even grab a light bite to eat—all while engaging in conversation that they may never have had elsewhere. These three founding fathers have a combined community contribution of over 75 years. They have engaged in countless spirited conversations independent of one another. Their impact on the area is difficult to quantify, but undeniable. This is one more example of they give they have given.

“Our goal is to create a place where anyone can feel comfortable to ask life-size questions in a welcoming and interactive way,” says Pastor Joe. “This event is not about recruitment to some church, it is about honest dialogue.” He will goes on to share enthusiasm for an idea formed over a dinner conversation about bringing people freedom for knowledge within their own comfort zone.

For many, this standing Tuesday evening option from 8-9:30 PM at the Roost may fit into schedules better than traditional offerings. Ironically, there is no required affiliation, sign up sheets, or offering taken; it is a complete give back. Even the snacks are modestly priced and plentiful. It is simply a means for those with some spiritual curiosity to meet with other Fishers/Geist residence in a way that works well for them and allow them to ask the things they have always quietly pondered. Father Phil states, “If everybody is created in the Image of God, we all learn so much just looking around.”

For many who attended the inaugural event from across the community, the dialogue was a pleasant surprise. The staff kept busy as the kick off was well attended with over 70 people enjoying the evening. Not a seat in the place went empty, yet it was still conducive to this type of conversation. Discussion ranged from the personal to philosophical. There were no sports conflicts, no cell phones, or agendas; just a beer, soda, or snack and some good company that will no doubt grow “In Good Spirits” weekly.
